lofoten Gore-Tex Pro wins test in FriFlyt magazine

Norwegian major outdoor action sport magazine, FriFlyt, has set the Norrøna lofoten Gore-Tex Pro jacket and pants up against nine other technical shell sets for freeride, and concluded that still none can beat the original.

The Norrøna lofoten concept has been setting the standard for good looking, colorful, super technical and minimalistic freeride apparel. Since then, a lot of new brands and products have dropped into the same line but Norwegian mag FriFlyt concludes that still none have catched up with the redesigned lofoten Gore-Tex Pro set, which was released in a new and improved version in front of this season. Late but great in the Alps

Norrøna Ambassador Kjetil Isaksen sends us some shots from a quick trip to the Swiss and Austrian Alps recently, having scored a good share of the great snow that came a bit late this season, but on the other hand definitely did not disappoint upon its arrival:

Barbara goes “Full Equip” in Spain

Norrøna Ambassador Barbara Raudner is enjoying an escape to the crags of sunny Spain, keeping her climbing shape on top through winter, and scoring another nice, hard route: “Full Equip”, 8c, in Oliana

“Oliana is a municipality in the Comarca of the Alt Urgell in Catalonia, Spain. It is situated in the Segre valley in an amazing landscape. It is actually the hot-spot of climbing – not only in Catalonia but Europewide – and many hard routes are situated on the crag above the municipality. Continue reading

Video: A minute of snow – The Axe Slash and the Monster

Northern Norway has passed the very darkest days of the year, when dawn meets dusk in just a tiny period of natural twilight each day, and head laps or other artificial lighting are required equipment for any outdoor activity extending to much more than a quick cross country lap. Now, the light is slowly returning north of the Arctic Circle, but Norrøna Ambassadors Niko and Vegard, with friends, have already defied both sparse snow conditions and the sun’s absence.

“December in northern Norway was dark, windy and dry. Aka good times. Most of the snow that did fall was blown off the mountains immediately, but some of it accumulated in the couloirs of Tamokdalen. So naturally we skied those. Continue reading

The Pacific Deep Wet – Powder in Washington

The Pacific North West corner of the Americas is known to get a lot of snow. La Nina seasons hit hard here, making for epic winters like the lasts, and records like the World record of 29 meters snowfall at Mt Baker for the 98-99 season. But it can get a lot of rain too. This season it’s been back and fourth so far, but there has definitely been some good days.

I have taken a month off this holiday season aka “The Dark Times” of the Lofoten Islands, to travel back to my roots the North Cascades. The promise of another Epic La Nina season and a chance to catch up with family and friends made booking a ticket back home to NW Washington State and easy one. Continue reading

Bird’s eye view – Learning to fly

Norrøna Ambassador Michael “Bird” Shaffer is finally learning to fly, practicing his first controlled takeoffs and landings from the home nest in Washington state, USA, in a period of thin conditions during the recent holidays. Read the bird’s words, and watch the video for a bird’s eye view on learning to fly:

“As a small child, I looked up in the sky and waved at planes that flew over. My father is a pilot and I thought he might be flying over. I remember jumping out of a tree with a super hero cape and tearfully explaining to my mom, as she patched up my knees and hands, “ But my dad can fly? ” Continue reading

Ulvetanna 2011 – Safely home

Norrøna Ambassador Robert Caspersen gives us the full story and lots of pictures, back home after his Antarctic climbing adventure:

“We are now safely back home in Norway just in time for Christmas, and it’s time to sum up our trip to Antarctica. In short it sums up to: too much challenging weather, too little time, not enough guts, great friendships and breathtaking surroundings, and still some projects to finish. Continue reading

Behind the seams: Norrøna down™750

Why down? What’s the difference between down and Primaloft? Who has got the best down? What distinguishes Norrøna’s different down jackets? And what about the birds? Follow us on this deep dive behind the seams of our down750 products:

Technology has enabled man to make some fantastic synthetic materials and fabrics, like waterproof/breathable Gore-Tex or super insulating and lightweight fleece. Synthetic fabrics have revolutionized the way we dress for outdoor adventures, but in many cases, nothing can beat what has come out of Nature’s own “research and development lab”. Still no machine makes smoother threads than the silk worm, and nothing is as light, insulating and compressible as down. Continue reading

December climbing in Spain

Norrøna Climbing Ambassador Hilde Bjørgaas got to spend some time in Spain this December, enjoying great cragging conditions, with nice weather, dry rock and an average temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius.

I’m dreaming of a rock hard, steep and solid vertical Christmas….

Hilde tends to write as much, or maybe more, about the food as about the climbing after her journeys, and this time is no exception. Spanish Serrano ham, olive oil, tomatoes, and bread has obviously been on the menu, between sessions on the crags in Siurana and Margalef. Hilde’s words in Norwegian: Continue reading
